Biomass Energy Heating Systems

Cheaper greener renewable fuel source systems with low CO2 emissions (typically 90% lower than oil)

Biomass is an industry which is expanding. In April 2009 we studied the industry in Sweden in conjunction with Bioenergy WM and Harper Adams University to gain knowledge on how to improve the industry in the UK.

What is Biomass?

Biomass is biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. In the context of biomass energy this is often used to mean plant based material, but biomass can equally apply to animal and vegetable derived material.

Dry Biomass

Virgin wood, e.g. forestry co-product
Energy crops, e.g. short rotation coppice, miscanthus
Agricultural residues e.g. straw
Industrial waste and co-products from manufacturing and industrial processes

Conversion technology: Combustion

Wet Biomass

Agricultural residues e.g. animal slurry
Food waste from food and drink manufacturing

Conversion technology: Anaerobic digestion

Biomass heat can be used for:

Space heating and hot water in buildings
Process heat for industrial uses
Steam production
Or any combination of these heating uses

Biomass heating systems installations:

At domestic scale (e.g. 10kWth)
Through to commercial (50kWth-several MWth)
To industrial/district heating scale (up to 100’s MWth)

There are 1000’s of systems in operation across the EU and North America

Current Biomass Use:

3.11MToe/yr (36.2TWh/year) is serving the electricity generation market (including co-firing)
Only 0.45MToe (5.2TWh/year) is serving the heat market
Current usage is estimated at just over half the available supply = however – co-firing and large power generators impart a percentage of their fuel requirement
Fuel supply predicted to rise by 25% to 8.3MToe(96.5TWh) per year by 2020 – arising from the supply of dedicated energy crops

The UK is vastly behind Sweden and Germany and we are urging the government to put forward more incentives.
